Meet the Author

Paul Reid is an award-winning journalist. In late 2003 his friend, William Manchester, in failing health, asked Paul to complete The Last Lion: Defender of the Realm. He lives in North Carolina.

William Manchester was a hugely successful popular historian and biographer whose books include The Last Lion, Volumes 1 and 2, Goodbye Darkness, A World Lit Only by Fire, The Glory and the Dream, The Arms of Krupp, American Caesar, The Death of the President, and assorted works of journalism.

    A great book on a great leader

    When the first volume of Wm.Manchester's trilogy appeared 25-years ago, I was so smitten by its excellence that I bought copies for half a dozen friends. All raved about it and two admitted they had used vacation time to stay home and read it. The second volume was just as good. Then began the long, long wait for the third and concluding volume -- the one that would cover Churchill's wartime leadership. Manchester died before he could write much of it but he had arranged for Paul Reid to finish it. Many of us worried whether Reid could write anything as good as Manchester's first two volumes. The returns are in and, if anything, Paul Read has surpassed the master in the breadth of his research and the style of his writing. People will be reading these masteroieces long after books have disappeared in languages that don't yet exist.

    Incredible--a must read for every generation!

    First a confession--I'm an escapist reader. I love sci-fi fantasy etc.
    Every once in a while I try my hand at a real, actually literate, author. I guess I should also admit I'm a crosswordnik. I knew my parents had Winston Churchill's books about WWII but wasn't too interested. I have read the first of the trilogy by William Manchester and am reminded of what truly great authors can do. Yes, I had a dictionary handy for the numerous times I had to look up the definition of a word--but, oh my--what a truly profound adventure. I had read a number of books about the turn of the 20th Century (i.e. 1800s going into the 1900s) but, notwithstanding the excellent Downton Abbey Series, depictions on PBS, I had no real sense of the era. Now I do--thanks to W. Manchester. This is a 5 star rave review. If you have any interest in WWI or WWII as to what it was really like--WM's ?trilogy is a Must Read. I'm glad I did. Don;t miss these books. They are worth the $50 or so bucks!!!!!

    I have just finished reading volume 1, and will be going on to the second volume immediately. One of the great strengths of the book is how it achieves such breadth. The era, the place, the politics, the people, the social mores and the people that came into contact with young Churchill and his family. 
    This is a fascinating and haunting book.

    Must Reading

    The real story of Churchill's impact on WWII is brought alive. It is amazing he survived all the events in his lifetime that lead to his role in the WWII.

    Very interesting, but not a quick read

    I knew the basic facts, but the incompetence of various governments and leaders, both civilian and military, during both WW1 and WW2 was a real eye-opener.

    The box set is kind of a misnomer since you can't really display it on a bookshelf.

    I have no idea if the information is presented clearly, although from the amount of research I would suspect that it is. Even though the writer is clearly a Churchill fan, other books are available to present other views.

    I'm about half way through the set and am enjoying it very much.
