CS Account

A CS account is automatically issued to you by the Computer Systems Lab (CSL) after you register for the course. This account provides you with access to the lab computers, a disk quota (for file storage), and a paper quota (for printing). Only registered students are given an account. See the "Account Information" page for more information about your CS account. To use this account you might need to activate it:

If you have problems with your password or account go to the Computer Systems Lab (CSL) in 2350 CS during regular business hours. Make sure to bring your UW student id.

CS Computer Labs

The computer labs are located on the first floor of the Computer Sciences building and are open from 7 am - 1 am every day. CS 367 is assigned to the Linux lab computers in 1366 CS. For other locations, look for the computers with the Linux operating system listed in the "Computer Systems Lab Instructional Facilities" page.

Remote Access:

You can also remotely log into these machines by connecting to best-linux.cs.wisc.edu (this is the linux machine in the CS labs currently having the fewest users). Alternatively, you can connect to best-galapagos.cs.wisc.edu or a specific machine with galapagos-NN.cs.wisc.edu where NN is a two digit number between 01 and 30.

Printing

All lab computers are set up to print on the printers in 1359 CS. Use the printer named laser. Each of your print jobs will be scheduled individually and may print out on any of the printers in that printer room.

CSL information about printing.

Paper Quota:

In order to print from lab computers, your paper quota must be greater than 0. At the start of the semester, all CS students receive an initial paper quota established by CSL. If you use all of your paper quota you must go to the Computer Systems Lab (CSL) in 2350 CS during regular business hours to purchase more pages.

Printer Problem?

If there is a problem with any of the printers or there is no paper left in the printer room send email to lab@cs.wisc.edu. Do not try to fix any of the printers yourself.
