Research Challenges in Networking

The goal of this course is to explore some of the research frontiers of computer networking. Roughly speaking the course will be broadly broken into two areas:

• New networking technologies being built "on top" of the core infrastructure, commonly known as overlay systems, e.g. CDNs, P2P applications like NICE, Kazaa, etc.
• New networking technolgies being built as a physical extension of the core infrastructure, e.g. the emerging mobile and wireless edge of the Internet, sensor networks, etc.

Although this is an independent study course, we will have weekly class meetings so that we can discuss research papers. Through this course, we will read a number of technical research papers in class, discuss their merits/de-merits and possibly brainstorm for new ideas through this process.

Students are strongly encouraged to work on a semester-long research project as part of this course.
