The Jouster. Built from scratch by me from AMA Plans; article can be found in the March 1994 issue. Designer: Harley Michaelis.

Both planes have built up, balsa-sheeted wings, finished with clear polyurethane and Krylon on the tips for color. Fuselage is thin birch ply entirely covered with fiberglass. I believe it to be nearly indestructable. Tail surfaces are covered with Monokote.

Control surfaces are aileron/rudder/elevator/flap. Radio is the RCD Hitec Prism 7x. It's not a sailplane radio, but unlike my old AM Futaba FG series, it works.

Why?

One day, fellow flier Dean was looking through one of my AMA magazines, saw the plans for the Jouster and suggested that we take on a scratch build project. After some thought, we ordered the balsa and started building.

I finished my green Jouster first. Dean got sidetracked with building a 2M Alcyone and muskie fishing. I made a joke that some day if he didn't finish his Jouster, he'd come in some day to find that I had. At that point, Dean said that I could finish the plane if I let him fly it.
