!!Your Role as a Computer Janitor !The art of computer maintenance There probably will be a computer breaking every week. Do your best to learn what all the parts do and identify trouble hardware in certain machines. Update this [list|?page=hardware_issues] of hardware issues whenever something arises for future reference as nearly all of the hardware used in one computer is used in another computer as well. !Cleaning Supplies There should always be an abundance of cleaning supplies in the office. These are for you to use. !Moving computers and other things No matter how macho you are, it is never a good idea to carry more than two computer towers or one CRT at a time. There is a cart, which is property of the Geography Department, it is generally kept on the second floor. Use it wisely. Don't stack slippery computers on top of each other and don't expect CRT's to sit on top of each other. !To SWAP or not to SWAP Strange as it is, the geography department gets new computers more often than new software, therefore, you will very often have to get rid of perfectly good computers. Try to make every possible effort to connect a good computer with a good home. However, some computers a just junk, not even fit for slackware, there are two holding areas for equipment to go to SWAP on the table just outside the [Geography Computer Lab|?page=m376], and in room 80 on the first floor. Before anything can go to SWAP you must fill out an inventory report at http://www.bussvc.wisc.edu/swap/pick-up.html to the best of your ability (note the logical incongruity between serial numbers and quantity) if you put the items in room 80, give the form to Sue in room 60, otherwise, give the forms to Onno in the cartlab.
