!!Places of Software Storage !A Lament Ideally, software should be grouped and easily accessible and everyone. The crooked rack I installed in room m379 should be used to store aged software. Useless driver discs should be pruned to one or two discs per model. Nothing should ever be misplaced or lent to people who don't plan on bringing it back. However, we helpdeskers are generally sloppy people who misplace CD's all the time. Compounding our innate sloppiness is the fact that we constantly have to leave jobs half done to get to class. Sometimes it is more prudent to just give the professor the software for them to install themselves. There's no reason someone with a Ph.D shouldn't be able to install Photoshop. ---- !ISO Storage Fortunately, there is a work around which has been shown to exponentially increase the likelihood of finding the right CD when you want it. By burning all our installation CD's to ISO's, using [doiso|?page=useful_software], you can burn the ISO back to CD and create a replacement in a jiffy. The serial numbers should all be accessible using the file on the hard drive where the ISO's are kept or [here|?page=licenses]. Alternatively, [daemon tools|?page=useful_software] can be used to mount and read ISO's like macs do naturally. ---- !Mac Software Most every piece of native mac software can be downloaded from Doit's servers. #Click go -> connect to server. and type "apple.doit.wisc.edu" #Username is geomac #password is ****** Select seeding from the menu. You can download most every piece of software for OSX here, as well as the latest OS versions (including Windows XP and Vista). DMG files can be burnt to CD or DVD using Roxio Toast (Also available on apple seeding) Beware, there are some software packages on apple seeding which do not have licenses and would be fruitless for you to try to install Be further aware, that installing Dave is a bad idea BE EVEN FURTHERER AWARE, burning an DMG or ISO file should be done directly from seeding or from a locally copied version of the file. Do no try to burn the mounted file systems. The data will transfer, but the CD's will be not be authentic, like and ISO or a DMG file would be.
