!!Firewalls !Before attempting anything. Make sure you know what a firewall is. The concept is basic, but firewalls can be used for many of the wrong things. It should not be used in place of virus scanning software. There are two different types of Firewalls involved at Science Hall. !Internal (DataLink to Application level) Internal firewalls can be set to block anything from bad programs on the computer to bad MAC addresses at remote places. The two programs we have trusted are: !Sygate Firewall (a very verbose and easy to set up firewall, download it for free (google: sygate download). !Windows Firewall (Not as vociferous as one might assume a MS product to be, use Windows Firewall by default) Since Windows Firewall is automatically installed on anything past Windows XP Service Pack 2, you don't really have to do anything to run it. !Note Make sure nobody runs Zone Alarm, this program causes too many problems. ---- !External (Cisco Pix - Physical to Transport Level) Paul administers the Cicso Pix Firewall which is a service provided by Doit. The Firewall is server running at Doit HQ on Dayton street. It needs many custom filters to function properly. Paul is eventually going to get all the Servers inside the firewall and keep the Labs outside the firewall. This may cause some confusion, but should wind up working well and stop hackers from snooping so much where you don't want them to be.
