Tomas Milian is twins, one a robber hunchback sought by the police, the other looking for his brother's affection
26 March 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"La banda del gobbo" or "Brothers Till We Die" stars Tomas Milian in a dual role. He plays twins. One twin is a hunchback, nicknamed Humpo. He's a clever robber and gang mastermind who has eluded police. He's been away from Rome for 16 months but now has returned to re-assemble his gang and rob an armored truck. The other twin is an auto mechanic, nicknamed Pigsty. He longs to be friendly with his brother, to help out, and to garner his brother's affection and approval. Humpo is 10 minutes older, so he's the big brother.

Humpo picks up a prostitute named Marie, played very nicely by Isa Danieli, who is a bright spot throughout the proceedings. She hits it off with Humpo and becomes a one-man woman. The cops are after Humpo but they are pretty colorless.

The music is groovy as the movie works its way without much continuity through a series of set pieces patched together. We see Pigsty taken to a psychiatric hospital at one point from which he must escape. We see the robbery in which Humpo's gang double crosses him and tries to kill him. We see it all, the planning, the execution and the outcome, including Humpo's escape. Then we see Humpo's revenge on the gang members, while Pigsty is questioned by the police and fends them off. There are two good chase scenes and a big shootout outside Rome. Then there is a nightclub scene with Humpo dancing that has to be seen to be believed.

The movie has good-looking color and is nicely photographed. It has more light-hearted touches than if it were a tough crime story, which it is not and is not meant to be.

So we have here a decent poliziottescho with some light-heartedness, mainly in the character of Pigsty, and some femininity (not nudity) in the character of Marie, and then the crime element surrounding Humpo. One cannot take this movie too seriously. It's reasonable entertainment.
