Like a lot of films Sammo Hung was involved with around this time, the stupidly titled Warriors Two is a brilliant movie--or a movie full of brilliance, anyway, if there's a distinction--with no regard for pacing or tone. It's got a personality crisis, even moreso than Spooky Encounters (another stupid title) or The Prodigal Son.
The setup is leisurely, hoary, even a bit boring, and it's sure to lose a few viewers' attention, which is a shame, because after a few tens of minutes there's a left turn into the surprisingly absurd and gratuitous. We get random bear trap attacks, a furious Sammo Hung going Mike Tyson on a guy's ear in a dark, croaking bamboo grove, a token weasely sycophant guy turning into a failed Mortal Kombat character, genital explosions (seriously), and death scenes that are inexplicably treated as a joke by the characters ("you're dead already?" Sammo at one point quips to a dying comrade). It's all part of Hong Kong's eight course meal philosophy: throw as much at the audience as you can, and use the time you could take to think about how to make it all coherent to throw some more instead. In many ways it hurts the final product, but thank god those penny-sniffers at Miramax or whatever didn't get their hands on it and slice it into something more commercial and politically correct like they did with Drunken Master 2 and Iron Monkey.
Anyway, the plot hovers somewhere around passable, but it's really more about the vibe than anything; it really wouldn't be the same without those vibrant Shaws-esque sets and general 70s kung-fu quirks. The action is obviously what gets this thing on some people's "greatest of all time" lists--philosophically I'm not sure I can relate, I mean I'd much rather care about why Casanova Wong's character is flipping 10 feet over a table to kick a guy than simply marvel at the fact he is, but it's impressive anyway. By the way, is Casanova Wong a slick name or what? In a failed porn producer sort of way, anyway. Good movie, doesn't quite break into my top 10 due to feeling a bit incomplete, but there's something to be said for its anarchism and spontaneity.
