I like Robert Forster in the movies, and Robert Forster likes to keep working, judging from his many credits. One of his earlier efforts, "Medium Cool" (1967) first brought him to my attention. Before that, he'd appeared in several other good movies ("Reflections in a Golden Eye" and "Stalking Moon".) I'm beginning to think that the late 70s and the 80s are an era in which good films were not abundant. Forster was in two movies in 1983, and neither was top quality. One was "Vigilante", which I remember as being pretty good. The second is this revenge movie "Walking the Edge". This one is pretty bad. It's rough and non-professional in a number of ways. The actors and acting are competent enough. I like Joe Spinell, and I've commented before that he made an impression in "The Anderson Tapes" and the Godfather movies. Here he plays a bullying and murdering gang leader. Nancy Kwan is certainly competent.
The problems are the story, the script, the directing, the sound and to a lesser extent the music. The whole effort comes across as distressingly unpolished. There are times when Forster either seems to be improvising or else the script calls for reactions that are too naturalistic or else the director simply couldn't get a subtle take. The story grinds to a halt in the middle and the actions make little sense given the situations the characters face.
This movie can safely be skipped.
