Arnold Schwarzenegger's character was originally intended to be a reprisal of Conan, star of the comic book in which Red Sonja first appeared, but the film did not have the rights to this name. An unofficial explanation endorsed by fans is that Kalidor is one of Conan's "traveling names," a common feature of multi-national mythical/legendary heroes such as Zeus aka Jupiter and J.R.R. Tolkien's Gandalf aka Mithrandir. See more »

The credits say that the movie is based on characters created by Robert E. Howard (who died in 1936), who created the basic Hyborian setting, as well as the character Conan (who appears here under the name Kalidor), but omit mention of writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith who created the title character Red Sonja in 1973. Quotes
Red Sonja:
What happened?
Falkon:
What happened? Queen Gedren attacked us is what happened.
Red Sonja:
Gedren? Queen Gedren?
Falkon:
That's right. She knocked down half the city with her new weapon and demanded our surrender.
Prince Tarn:
My army ran away. Do they want to live forever? I refused to surrender.
Falkon:
So she knocked down the other half.

Personally this is one of my all time favorite movies since I was very young. That being said I had not seen this movie in over a decade before seeing it on the shelf at the grocery store where I purchased it.
I had just watched the two Conan movies a few nights prior and I sat down with my lady to watch an old favorite.
To me this movie was infinitely more enjoyable than the Conan movies. And even as an adult some 20 years later with a much wider and esoteric taste in movies, music and games; I found this movie a blast and I'm not going to say it's a 10 and nor am I going to play the role of lap top critic.
I'm just going to say this: In a world of horrible blockbusters like GI Joe and Transformers I feel Red Sonja was money and time well spent.
