Project Overview

This project is part of a multidisciplinary effort to analyze, understand, and remediate problems concerning protection of critical national infrastructures. In particular, the overall project includes basic mathematical and engineering analysis of system structure and properties, analysis of human factors aspects both of system operations and the acts of intelligent adversaries including red teams, the design of new practical and more robust techniques and software systems for detecting intrusions and responding to restore systems after attacks.

The project goals include:

  • Develop models and simulation tools for detection, characterization, and assessment of vulnerabilities in networked interacting systems. These models will facilitate development of methods for mitigating potential vulnerabilities in such systems.
  • Develop understanding of the underlying phenomena and technological opportunities in systems employing hybrid human, physical, and informational architectures, and build models and simulation environments suited to such systems.
  • Identify key vulnerabilities and develop principles for reducing vulnerability to human intrusion in networked systems.
  • Explore the use of models and simulation, together with evolving knowledge in human factors engineering, to replace conventional red teaming in exploring vulnerabilities of infrastructure systems.
  • Synthesize ideas and techniques in pilot studies to establish proof of concept.
