There are some very recent articles on Deng's politics in Newsweek, 
Le nouvel Observateur, and other journals. These articles seem to 
contain some (maybe wrong) answers to your questions. In particular, 
Chinese 1979 invasion was a consequence of China trying to contain
the "soviet expansionism". Deng was speaking of "giving Vn a lesson"
to Kissinger before. (there seems to be also some reasons coming from
internal struggles for power in China, which were not mentioned in that
articles).
