Philosophically:

Is causing massive deaths for ideological motivations any different/better?
And perhaps they did have an ideology: serve the Japanese king by militarism.
Besides, the Chinese, the French, the Americans all have caused massive
deaths in Vietnam, and the British blocked Vietnamese independence in 1945.
Last and not least, the North and the South caused massive deaths to each other.

Pragmatically:

Vietnam needs to be well integrated in the region to discourage Chinese
opportunism.
