Re: Movies & Vietnamese arts

Dear anh Hai,

I would take out any Japanese film the library or the local shops
have, and I have never been disappointed. The Japanese have a wonderful
sense of aesthetic and that is one of the major attractions to me. The actings
can be a bit too stylised, but the characters are very good. The stories can be
a bit simple, but they are strong and timeless.

Vietnam has a fantastic, if full of suffering, recent history: the collapse
of the old order, French occupation, resistance, the North-South war,
the pre-doi-moi experience, the overseas experience, the present transformation.
This makes a good back ground for Vietnamese films. We are also exposed to many
different Western cultures: French, Russian, American; not many Asian countries
have such varied influences. We also have good appreciation for literature.
We are also kind of philosophical. We have many potentials for making good
films.
