Well, you're not alone! When I was in high school, I thought it was
a piece of Russian music, since I heard it in a Russian cartoon
on the Russian channel. Which was of course not a surprise, since almost
anything goin' on was contributed by the Russians in one way or another :-)

Other than that, I always confused this tune with another popular
tune called "Love Story" (if I remembered correctly, people used to
translate the title as "Lich su tinh yeu" which is of course
inappropriate but sounds good, doesn't it?).

To be exact, the music came first as the soundtrack for the movie "Godfather"
and was originally written by Nino Rota (another famous Italian composer, much like
Ennio Morricone). The lyrics you heard was added later on, and I think the song
was first popularized by an American entertainer named Andy Williams in mid-70's.
FYI check the following pointer for your beloved love song:

BTW, I think he sang "Love Story", too (plus many other oldies for lovers; just
in case you fall in love!).

Take care,
