I just wonder why Pink Floyd is so popular among university students, and
why most people stop their adventure into music at Pink Floyd. They are
just a band among many, many other contemporary bands. Maybe because of
their huge success of "The Dark Side of The Moon" in '73? I can mention
many bands that were as great as PF in the same period; still, they were
relatively unknown for the wide public.

In my opinion, PF was really influential to the progressive music scene
in late 60's, early 70's. Their early psychedelic rock with the heavy
use of electronic sound effects was really "hip" and "underground" at that
time in London clubs. They were one of the pioneers of the symphonic rock,
and with Rogers Waters being as one of the most productive composer in the
rock history. They really deserve the fame and fortune they've had so far!

On the other hand, IMO they stopped being "progressive" before the
renowned "The Dark Side of The Moon" mentioned above. Except for
the final great work in "Wish You Were Here" in '74, they became
less and less experimental, more and more commercial, and burnt out
musically. My finest experiences with PF were induced by their early works
(not all of them). I strongly recommend their live performance in Pompeii,
captured on video in '71. Great stuff!

Just an interesting fact, I've heard that PF is leading in the number
of PF bootlegs ever produced and circulated out there. If some of you have
an early bootleg with good sound quality, please drop me a line. Thanks!

Cheers,

-Thanh
