   Micrometeorology -- Wind and Turbulence in Forest Clearings
   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two graduate research positions are available in an ongoing program to
study wind and turbulence associated with forest clearings of different
sizes, shapes, and orientations in various topographical locations, with a
view towards understanding microclimate for tree seedlings and blowdown of
mature trees along the edges. The research program consists of wind tunnel
and field measurement combined with numerical flow modelling. Prospective
students should have a strong background in micrometeorology and
turbulence theory with good mathematics skills.
Funding is from Forest Renewal of B.C. and the stipend is $18,900/yr for
Ph.D. students.  As of April 1, 1997, the project entered its second of
four years. Start date is as soon as possible. Please send a letter of
interest and c.v. to Dr. Michael D. Novak, Dept. of Soil Science,
University of British Columbia, 139-2357 Main Mall, Vancouver, B.C.,
V6T-1Z4 or phone/fax at (604) 822-2875 (p)/822-8639 (f) or e-mail at
Thank you. My apologies to anyone who receives this message twice.
