Hi
GNP & GDP doesn't describe the people wellbeing, happiness,
quality of life, even purchasing power. These also depend on
social factor - income distribution, environment, general
optimism of the people, political stability and democracy,
etc. etc.
However, GNP is strongly correlated to two thing: the ability
to buy modern weaponry and the possession of an influential voice
in the world community. In short, it is strongly correlated to
the ability to defend sovereignty in the modern world.
Without a large GNP, a country can still defend itself
if it is purposeful enough and its people are brave enough,
but only at great difficulty and horrific costs to its
people, its cultural heritage, its environment, its
political and social structure, its economic and
diplomatic sovereignty (read: becoming a vassal state),
in short its whole future as an independent and civilized
nation.
That's why I drew your attention to the fact that, at
present trends, VN's per capita income will be about 1/3
of China's in the year 1015.
Cheers
