Hi,

Bootstrap theory is a trend in particle physics circa 1960, which has long
become obsolete.  This trend is sometimes called "nuclear democracy", the
name comes from the theory's underlying philosophy claiming that all
elementary particles participating in strong, or nuclear, interaction
(protons, neutrons, pions and hundreds of others known at this time) are,
at equal extent, the fundamental building blocks of Nature. 

Progress in experiments has shown that these particles are built from more
fundamental blocks called quarks.  This brought death to the bootstrap
theory, whose value now is mostly historical. 

The modern theory of strong, or nuclear, interaction is Quantum
chromodynamics (QCD), which is based on an entirely different philosophy.
