Re: Top-Ten erotic movies

Well put, Hai! I guess this is the main message of the movie, and I also
agree that this was a big shock for conservative citizens. On the other hand,
just imagine a little boy 17-18 years old like me, innocent but curious about
all these kinds of stuff, and instead of some fresh and pleasant entertainment
(smiley here) had to watch all sorts of sexual tortures and pains and
agonies. Even the cast didn't look convincingly handsome and beautiful
and cute. BTW, the frustration was heightened after paying good money
for the tickets and for the cab back to the hostel (as far as I can
remember, the movie was shown so late at night that it ended after
2 o'clock in the morning, so no public transportation was available).
And I'm still not talking about using fake I.D. in order to get in, since
it was strictly for adults :-) Well, I'm kidding, but you understand
why I feel so bad about this movie. I think I would never watch it again!
Just to quote some critique, this is what I found in the IMDB about
"In The realm of The Senses":
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
To call the film a masterpiece, however, as so many have done, is way
off-base. Oshima's film wouldn't be enjoying a re-release if it weren't
for the fact that it shows male and female genitalia, and depicts actors
in a series of sex acts -- fellatio, coitus, lesbian sex, asphyxiation,
sex with food -- that eventually numb the viewer with their repetition.
Was it a calculated effort to win himself the international attention that
he later received? It's worth noting that none of Oshima's subsequent films
-- ``Empire of Passion,'' ``Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence'' and ``Max Mon
Amour'' -- has caused much of a wave, or offered evidence of an enduring,
world-class talent.

I haven't seen many famous erotic movies ("Basic Instinct", for instance).
But I remember a couple controversial ones including "The Last Tango in
Paris", "The Last Woman" and "A Thousand and One Nights". I saw the
last one, but couldn't remember much. However, it could not compete
with the mentioned Japanese movie in terms of graphic sexuality.

My roommate checked out some movies from her lately, like "The Juror"
or "Striptease". Man, I got sick from her. Nudity is not the main
problem, but the acting. I don't like "Ghost", either, since it is
way much romantic to me. However, I know this was a very popular one
for lovers. I know an Italian guy who've watched this film at least
five times. Anyone out there who has watched more than that? :-)

Well I guess I didn't show up in your funny story, but I did the same
thing, probably one year later. I think that movie theater was called
Ipoly, and I can't remember where it is now. BTW, its name was
changed a few years later, and I think today it is a blue movie house
(blue movie = hard core). Man, these days you can watch almost
anything you want in Budapest in daytime. They have adult shops,
blue movie theaters, peep shows, topless bars and so on. Pornography
has become a booming business in Hungary :-(
Last, I also remember getting (and asking for) advice from some of you
who came to Budapest one year before us about what three star movie was
worth watching. Actually that's why we went to watch "Lady Chatterley's
Lover" and other movies. Of course, a lot of martial arts movies, too.
(Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Shaolin etc.) Man, I remember travelling from
one end of the town to the other end late at night just to watch
a movie in an unheated movie theater during wintertime. And the amazing
thing that always stroke me was that at least half of the audience
were Vietnamese :-) What a passion and energy we had at that time!
What about other folks in other countries?
Best,
