short wave station
Hi everybody,
I'd like to introduce you one electronic newsletter about the shortwave
stations over the world. Every people who like to listen to shorwave stations
are welcome to receive it and contribute to its life by discovering new
stations or any changes to inform other friends. Vietnam has known as having
many stations being broadcasted but not yet indentified clearly. I have tried
to check some from Bangkok but the result is not so good, just caught some
with quite low quality sound. From other places I have no chance to do. So if
you like you can participate in this effort. To know more details please
contact Hans Johnson <73042.3644@CompuServe.COM>.
Followed are some information and one issue of the Cumbre DX.
Cheers.

Hoang-
Most people listen to shortwave for news and other
entertainment. There is a group of people, called Dxers, who
try and tune in as many different stations as possible and then
report the results to others.
Vietnam is of high-interest to Dxers because it has
many shortwave stations. In addition to two National Networks
operating from Hanoi, there are several regional stations operating
in the country. This is where we need your help. We are able to
hear these stations but since we cannot speak Vietnamese we
cannot identify them properly. You would be doing us a great
service if you could listen to some of these stations and identify
them for us. The results would be published in our weekly news
letter, Cumbre Dx, and you would be given full credit for your work.
Please understand that Cumbre Dx is run by volunteers and is
given away to all who contribute to it, so neither myself nor anyone
else would benefit financially from your work.
We would be very grateful if you could help us out. If
you are interested, please drop me a line. I need to know if your
radios have digital frequency readout or not. Please let me know
if you are interested and I will send you some additional information
on when and where to look.
Sincerely,
Hans Johnson

A typical report will look like this
VIETNAM 7154 Bac Thai Radio Station heard from
1205 universal time until 1230 with talk by man and woman in
Vietnamese and a station identification. (Trong May 7)
I hope this helps.
Sincerely,

NORTH KOREA For the first time in my memory, on May 8,
Pyongyang Broadcasting Station aired the regular random
number broadcast on ONLY 6400 kHz and NOT the
normally parallel 3250 kHz from 1500. All the other SW
channels (3250, 3320 and 6250) carried regular news and
music. Normally from 1500 UTC, 3250 and 6400 always
carry random numbers, while 3320 and 6250 carry either
regular programs or a different set of random numbers.=20
North Korea has several regular and irregular random
number transmissions daily (apparently for its spies in South
Korea and Japan), some of which are aired as regular
"programs" on Pyongyang Broadcasting Station, North
Korea's official service for Koreans in South Korea and
Japan. (Ashimori May 8)
NORTH KOREA While the activity of Frontline Soldier
Radio remains irregular on the 3 frequencies (1616, 2625,
3025), further monitoring has revealed that the station, when
it's on, broadcasts almost always 1400-2000. There is no
interval signal, but the ID ("Chonyun Chobyondurul wihan
Bangsong imnida.") is heard more regularly than before,
especially about 30 +/-3 min. past the hour, followed by the
station's theme music, as well as at sign on and sign off.
Programs on the 3 channels are always separate, even
when they are all on, although very similar programs such
as different commentaries read by the same announcer are
often heard simultaneously. Frequent brownouts still
interrupt transmissions on all channels. (Ashimori May 5)
OMAN 6120 R.Oman with sign on at 1800 in Arabic, into

UNIDENTIFIED Per tip from Mahendra Vaghjee in
Mauritius, tuned into Voice of Mediterranean test 1800-1900
on 9765 today (parallel 5890 inaudible). Went on IRC #swl
and listened with Jay Novello. VOM was there, mixing with
Voice of Russia in English VOM signed off at 1900, but
someone remained on in English and it wasn't VOR. After a
frustrating hour of listening to very poor signal in English,
the station went into Arabic at 1957...then was found on
parallel 12060, making this likely VOM. Does this mean
9765 switched from Voice of Russia to Voice of
Mediterranean, right when Juelich's test went off?

operation in a near future), and 9640 (CXA8). Recently, the
Director of the DNC, Dr. Ernesto Dehl, has revealed his
opinion about the convenience of the use of SW by
Uruguayan stations to enhance the image of the country to
the world. The Nat'l telecom authority will try to ease the
assignment process to local broadcasters and to help them
-if they cannot afford the purchase of such equipment - in
the way of using agreements with foreign countries which
could be in a position of granting favorable financial plans to
this purpose. (Nigro, May 1)

RA a budget of AUS$8.5 Million, compared with AUS $20

Other languages to continue are Bahasa, Khmer,

DENMARK World Music Radio back on the air !!
Many European short wave listeners will recall the
jingle "Come along with us - we've got a good thing going -
WORLD MUSIC RADIO". Now this popular station of the
70'ies and 80'ies will be back on the airwaves again very
soon.
The new World Music Radio - WMR - will commence
broadcasting as of May 31st 1997 and will be on the air
every Saturday and Sunday at 1800-2200 UTC on two
frequencies: 3345 kHz (for Southern Africa only) and 6290
kHz for "the rest of the World". The transmiter site is South
Africa, and Africa will be the prime target area for the new
broadcasts of WMR. However the strong signals of the 250
kW transmitter is also beleived to be well heard in parts of
Southern Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
World Music Radio will - as the station has been
doing in the past - play the best of the current hits and the
best of the hits from the past - presented in a personal,
informal and friendly style.
The antenna beam of the 250 kW transmitter on 6290
kHz has not been decided
yet. In order to find the best solution test transmissions will
be conducted on May 8th, 10th and 11th on this frequency,
and listeners all over the World - but in Africa in particular -
are invited to monitor these transmissions and let us know
which ones are received at a good level. Here the schedule
on 6290 kHz for May 8th, 10th and 11th.
Antenna no. 1: 1800-1828, 2000-2028 and
2100-2128 UTC
Antenne no. 2: 1900-1928, 2030-2058 and
2130-2200 UTC
Antenna no. 3: 1830-1858 and 1930-1958 UTC
Monitoring observations are requested by fax (+45 70 222
888) or by e-mail to wmr@cybernet.dk (but please observe
that there will be no QSL-card available for these
test-transmissions; if someone desperately need a
verification we will provide a QSL-letter on request. A
QSL-card will be made available for the "offficial" broadcasts
as of May 31st 1997. By then reception reports should be
forwarded to: WMR, P. O. Box 112, DK-8900 Randers,
Denmark - enclosing return postage).

JAPAN Follow up to comments made in Cumbre DX #136:
Is NSB's nickname Radio Tanpa or Radio Tampa? Good
question. In Japanese it's pronounced "tampa" and written
"tanpa." Problem is, Japanese is not usually written with
English alphabet, and the general rule as to how to
alphabetize Japanese ("roma-ji") is not clear when the
pronunciation differs from the Japanese orthography. If NSB
says it's Tampa, maybe we should all use that spelling.
Neither is right nor wrong, anyway. (Ashimori, May 2)
KIRIBATI 9810 R Kiribati is regarded by some of us in
Australia as a "utility" service, on the basis that it was
established some time ago as a USB HF PTP link, for
subsequent rebroadcasting. Over many years, this 250
watt SSB facility has operated on various HF outlets, in SSB
mode, from Betio Island, intended as an on-air feed for the
MW service on Christmas Island, (in the Line Island group to
the North east), on 1115 kHz. This SSB feeder service
commenced around 1981, using 16433 kHz. Freqs used
have included 14917.7, 17440 (1993), 9825 (1994, 1995,
1996), and 9810 (1997). I have written to Radio Kiribati
seeking technical details of the HF service, which is
considered (by some!) as a form of de-facto shortwave
broadcasting service. The regular SW service on the 60mb
outlet ran on 4912.5, with 2 kW, prior to 1981. (Padula

NEW ZEALAND Some sad news to report. Between poor
health and the competition from today's e-mail bulletins,
Arthur Cushen's snail-mail "Shortwave Review" is now a
thing of the past. Here is the item, as quoted from Arthur's
letter to me.
"This is the last Shortwave Review page that we will
be sending to you. We have been releasing twenty copies
of this material for many years, and as little of the
information has been printed or used in broadcasts, we are
ending this part of our operation. The other factor is my
health, and we are trying to reduce the workload at the
moment." (Cushen via Lamb May 7) [I do not know if
Cushen will continue to do his
column for the New Zealand DX Times on which the review
is based, his features for Radio Netherlands' Media
Network, or if he will continue to be on Radio New Zealand
International. (Lamb)
