The Mars Rover & random walk

Hello friends,

        I am curious on on the Mars Rover, which according to 
the news, can travel some quarter mile from its base. Any of 
you know what its strategy will be when the radio link loses 
contact?  A safe option is to backtrack, but that could get 
it into a repetitive loop.  A continuous update of its 
position relative to the base would permit it to try another 
route back, but requires on-board "intelligence" to go round 
rocks etc.
