French film festival

French film week will take place July 21 to 27 in Hanoi to mark the
208th anniversary of French National Day and is one of many activities
to greet the Francophone Summit in November.

"Unforgotten Songs"

Students and veterans will share the stage at the Children's Palace to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of "War Invalids and Martyrs" Day (July
27) jointly organized by  VTV channel 3 and the Vietnam Students Center.

Hot shots compete

The 1997 national shooting cup will be held July 10 to 19 at the
National Sport Center. Over 100 shooters from Hanoi, the Army, Hai
Phong, Interior Ministry, Hai Duong, Thanh Hoa, Vinh Phuc and Sport
College will compete. Shooters under 18 will also compete in 18 events
(five for women) and air-gun in eight events (four for women).

Singapore seminars

A delegation of Vietnam youth attended seminars and discussions on mass
organization, extra curricular life, youth groups and scientific and
social activities in Singapore July 4 to 9,  This is the 3rd Vietnam
delegation sent to Singapore in the framework of youth activities
between the two countries.

Tour de Mekong

The '97 Mekong Delta Cyclist Cup kicks off August 14, and crosses 11
Mekong Delta provinces with seven men riders covering 1008 km and three
women covering 229km. The event was organised by the Vietnam Cycling
League and the An Giang Sports Department.Also, a team of women cyclists
will attend the Asian Female Cyclist Championship in Korea from
September 2 to 6.

Table tennis tournament

The 11th Gold Racket Cup will take place from July 24 to 27 in Phan Dinh
Phung arena in Ho Chi Minh City. Eight international groups have
registered: France, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea,
Thailand and Shantou (China)

VTV sees bigger picture

Vietnam Television General Director Ho Anh Dung says the station is
striving to have four channels on the air some 50 hours a day with half
of the programing produced at home by 2000.

New museum to open

The Hanoi Museum will be built on a 20,000 sq. metre plot at No.47 Cat
Linh St. Objects repres-enting different periods of Hanoi's development
will be on display with other rooms for folk games, festivities and
refreshments. The museum is part of the celebration of the city's
1,000th anniversary.

Chess challegers head abroad

Chess player Dao Thien Hai will be a special participant in the U20
world chess championship in Poland July 13 to 28. Female players Phuong
Lien and Ngoc Phuong will also attend. Six other players have left for
Indonesia for the 1997 World Cities Chess Championship. They will join
players from 46 countries.

Taekwondo Cup set to kick off

The largest International Taekwondo Cup ever in Hanoi will be held July
18 to 20. Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Nepal, Thailand, Lao, Korea, Hong
Kong, Taiwan, Britain and China have sent in their list of participants.
