Surfs up as Net access gets nearer
By Nguyen Ngoc Chinh

IN a few weeks, Internet users will be able to plug into
fully-operational global services for less money, the Institute of
Information Technology (IOIT) has revealed. The IOIT is preparing to
launch full Internet connection, boosted by the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Environments nationwide drive to modernise the countrys
information technology network. According to the IOIT, the new
services will allow NetNam and VAREnet users to deliver mail
instantaneously through the Internet. Local users will also be able to
surf the World Wide Web and access forums and file libraries
world-wide on the Internet. NetNam users will also have a chance to
access Vietnam-based Web sites which include United Nations home
pages, Vietnam Online business and travel information, academic
on-line databases and many other pages as they become available. The
IOIT has also asked its users to post their organisations Web pages on
its service to contribute to Vietnams information technology
development. According to the IOITs announcement, pages will be listed
free of charge if they are less than two megabytes. The service
provider said they would also establish remote connections with other
Internet hosts world-wide and let subscribers electronically "chat" in
real time with other users. Internet subscribers will also have the
choice to retain their current client software (Worldgroup Manager),
or switch to standard Internet mail and news readers and browsers such
as Netscape Navigator, MS Explorer, Pegasus Mail and Eudora. The IOIT
said NetNam and VAREnet would strengthen their system with more than
100 dial-up lines available in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Users
have also been informed that their account charges will be decreased
slightly and only be charged for a basic monthly subscription and
connection time. Fees on kilobyte transmittal will no longer be
levied. "Hopefully all of us will say adieu forever to the stone age
of NetNam," said the IOITs announcement to its users.
