Taiwan-quake

TAIPEI: Massive aftershocks rocked Taiwan, hampering rescue efforts to
save at least 3,000 people trapped under rubble by an earthquake that
has already killed at least 1,800.

operations as a possible "new beginning" in their strained relations.

AMMAN: Jordan is to expel one of the three leaders of the hardline

DILI: Sander Thoenes, a 30-year-old Dutch national based in Jakarta for
the Financial Times, has been confirmed killed in East Timor, a UN
official said.

protested at the Australian embassy in Jakarta against what they called
Canberra's meddling in East Timor, witnesses said.

JAKARTA: The killing of an East Timorese militiaman in West Timor led to
the revenge burning of 16 homes in a village south of the border town of
Atambua, a report said.

MOSCOW: The Russian foreign ministry said that Moscow was "very
concerned" about an accord which will see the Kosovo Liberation Army
(KLA) transformed into a civilian security force.

JERUSALEM: Israel brusquely brushed aside French efforts to play the
role of matchmaker in peace negotiations with Syria, casting a chill
over Prime Minister Ehud Barak's visit to Paris. 

Philippines-volcano

MANILA: The volatile Mayon volcano in the eastern Philippines fired
reddish ash high in the air in a sudden explosion, but officials ruled
out the possibility of a full eruption. 

Sweden-arms

STOCKHOLM: Celsius, a Swedish arms group, said it was selling its
subsidiary Kockums Naval Systems to German shipyards Howaldtswerke
Deutsche Werfte (HDW), which would create the biggest manufacturer of
conventional submarines in the world.
