NA DEPUTIES DISCUSS IMPLEMENTATION OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC TASKS IN 1999 AND
DIRECTIONS FOR 2000

Ha Noi, Nov. 22 (VNA) -- National Assembly deputies met at the Ba Dinh
conference hall on Nov. 22, the fourth working day of the current NA
session, to discuss the implmentation of the socio-economic and
budgetary tasks in 1999 and directions and tasks for 2000.

Deputies from An Giang, Thanh Hoa, Vinh Long, Ha Tinh and Long An
provinces agreed with the Government's report on the implementation of
the socio-economic tasks in 1999 which has brought about encouraging
achievements in improving the people's living conditions recording more
than 5 percent increase in agricultural production, surpassing the
target set by the NA, and a growth rate of more than 10 percent in
industrial production, and achieving an export value estimated at more
than USD 10.7 billion.

On directions for 2000, NA deputies focused their discussion on urgent
work for the coming period with emphasis on agriculture and rural
development, a common concern of deputies now. A deputy from Thanh Hoa
province said that rural areas are still facing difficulties such as the
lack of a system of services for the household and farm economy and the
low qualifications of communal authority officials. A deputy form Ha
Tinh province called for seeking more outlets for farm produce while
many other deputies asked for more investment in agriculture.

Proposals were also made for the reduction and exemption of agricultural
tax for farmers, saying that it is a measure to reduce poverty and
promote consumer demand in rural areas inhabited by about 80 percent of
the country's population.--VNA
