USD 866 MILLION OF SEA FOOD EXPORTED IN 11 MONTHS

Ha Noi, Nov.  25 (VNA) -- The fisheries sector has obtained an estimated
turnover of USD 866 million from exports in the past eleven months of
this year, a year-on-year increase of 12 percent or 92 percent of the
yearly plan. 

Among the key aquatic produce processing localities, Ca Mau southernmost
province has processed 21,000 tonnes of aquatic producce, earning USD
110 million; and Can Tho Mekong delta province has produced more than
4,000 tonnes. 

Shrimp breeders in Da Nang Central Port City had harvested the year's
second shrimp crop before the on set of the floods, bringing the 1999
shrimp output to nearly 120 tonnes, or 150 percent of the yearly plan. 

The central province of Khanh Hoa, one of Viet Nam's key shrimp
production localities, has developed a network to encourage to help
farmers put more than 5,000 ha under aquaculture.  This has helped the
province annually earn hundreds of thousands of billion dong. 

However, the mass development of shrimp production farms over the past
years has damaged the environment, especially in coastal regions. 

The situation requires more efforts for a strategic plan for aquaculture
to ensure raw material for processing aquatic produce for export and
improve environment.--VNA
