HANOI, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Vietnam has recorded 16,175 people with the
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and around 600 new cases are being
reported each month, the official Vietnam News Agency (VNA) said on
Thursday.

VNA quoted figures from the National HIV/AIDS Committee that showed
2,907 people had developed full-blown AIDS, and said 1,512 of them had
died.

Vietnam detected its first HIV case in 1985, but health workers say the
number of HIV and AIDS sufferers is much higher than the official
figures.

Communist Vietnam, home to 79 million people, has a thriving
prostitution industry and growing drug-use problem.
