Macbeth, a Thane of Scotland, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself.
This is by far the most visually stunning film I have seen this year. Adam Arkapaw (cinematographer of True Detective season one )is gifted at painting visceral and truly hunting images that stick with the viewer long after the credits roll.
Much credit must go to director Justin Kurzel, he adapts Shakespeare's masterpiece in a way that ejects a raw edge while also keeping the desolate and captivating narrative of the play. The way in which he handles the battle sequences is jaw dropping and every shot is like a painting. This is a film that requires multiple viewing and is more a work of art than an entertaining piece.
The cast is terrific, Micheal Fassbender gives a powerhouse performance as "Macbeth". He captures the characters' inner turmoil and decay into madness in a way that left me utterly speechless. "Lady Macbeth" is played by the incredible Marion Cotillard, she portrays the sly, manipulative character with the supreme talent she has. Supporting roles are also perfectly cast with Sean Harris being my personal favorite as "Macduff".
The score of the film is also particularly striking and composer Jed Kurzel is able to condense the desperate power struggle into an unforgettable score.
The only issues I had with the film was that some monologues are extremely repetitive. This may benefit a live production of the play, but for a motion picture it simply slows it down. They at times took me out of the film. These monologues may also struggle to connect with audiences as they can become difficult to understand and unriddle.
However this film is an achievement, with powerful performances, unique visuals, an unforgettable soundtrack and visceral directing Macbeth really is a work of art and my personal favorite adaption of the play. I am going to give it a 9.1/10.
