Went to go see this at a midnight screening, and it totally lends itself to that type of event.
It's not horrifying in the traditional cinematic sense, it's more terrifying. Similar to The Visit which came out at the same time as this one.
At the core of it, Mom comes back home after getting plastic surgery due to an accident. She takes out her frustration from recuperating on her children which makes them feel that the woman they are living with is not their mother. Though, I'm paraphrasing the pilot a lot here.
Though not as clever as it's trying to be, Goodnight Mommy soars in setting up a very disturbing situation that escalates as the movie progresses and hit you at the very core. It's a simple premise of what happens when a family expresses a psychological trauma in the worse way possible.
Totality recommend seeing this movie. It scares you without using too many bells and whistles
