According to director Adam Wingard, the first rough cut of The Guest was over 20 minutes longer than the final theatrical version. After this version was test screened with an audience, it was cut down to a running time very close to that of the theatrical version. After another test screening, some in the audience were confused at the sudden arrival of Major Carver and his team at the Peterson's home, so a couple of scenes with Carver at KPG headquarters were added for the final version. Some of the scenes which were cut down or deleted after test screenings were scenes which explained what exactly "David" is, what happened to him, why he does some of the things he does, and more about the KPG program that he was involved in. These scenes were cut because test audiences felt that it was too much information. Even Wingard and screenwriter Simon Barrett admitted that they hated explaining David's character and his background because they always wanted to leave much of the information about him ambiguous. That's why they were glad that those scenes were disliked by test screening audiences and had to be deleted. See more »

While the second half is forgettable action fun. A very uneven movie, which raises enormous expectations in those first 40 minutes, but ultimately can't deliver. We, the viewer, are still left with half of a marvelous movie. The main actor is incredible. Not in the Pacino sense, but more in the Schwarzenegger sense. He creates an iconic character, which is extremely sympathetic and scary at the same time. The writing has some obvious plotting issues, but all the way through you'll come across terrifically written scenes. The direction and overall acting is top notch. But to me, the greatest thing about the film ia its use of music. It has one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a movie for a long time. Think Miami Vice crossed with Brad Fiedel's work on the The Terminator. Really effective stuff.
Like I said, the second half is forgettable and formulaic, but still fun.
