Lance Preston and the crew of "Grave Encounters", a ghost-hunting reality television show, are shooting an episode inside the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, where unexplained phenomena have been reported for years. All in the name of good television, they voluntarily lock themselves inside the building for the night and begin a paranormal investigation, capturing everything on camera. They quickly realize that the building is more than just haunted - it is alive - and it has no intention of ever letting them leave. They find themselves lost in a labyrinth maze of endless hallways and corridors, terrorized by the ghosts of the former patients. They soon begin to question their own sanity, slipping deeper and deeper into the depths of madness, ultimately discovering the truth behind the hospital's dark past...and taping what turns out to be their final episode. In Dr. Arthur Friedkin's room, there is a book on a table; the book is just one page of runes that is repeated. The runes in the book are an old script used by the Norse (Vikings). The runes can be translated directly into the English language, and the words clearly read out a parody of "I've learned" written by an unknown author. The parody reads as follows: "Steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades, and there had better be a lot of money to take its place. I've learned that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down will be the ones who do. I've learned that we don't have to ditch friends because their dysfunction. They are more f**ked up than you think." See more »
Goofs
When, in the beginning of the movie they go with Kenny Sandavol into a room that has writing all over the walls. The writing is as crisp and clear as if it was done yesterday. It is stated that this hospital closed down in 1963. There is no way, even in the most pristine conditions, that the writing and the paint could look like that after 51 years! Especially in a room that has had no heat, A/C or any type of protection against cold and humidity. It would have only taken a year or two before the paint would have started badly peeling off the walls under those conditions. Yet, we are supposed to believe that the paint and the writing has been preserved so well fifty one years later. See more »

Let me start out by letting you know I'm a horror movie addict. I probably watch 3-4 horror movies a week. I've watched nearly everything from the 1970s to now. I watch foreign horror movies. I listen to old radio dramas. You get the picture.
This movie stood out. Don't watch a trailer for it, I feel even that will spoil it. Make some popcorn, turn the lights off, put the volume high and hold on for the thrill ride.
I'm surprised this movie hasn't gotten more attention. It easily puts the rest of the found-footage flicks like Rec and Paranormal Activity in its pocket. It's not without its faults but I believe all the great scares and plot will more than make up for it.
The cast does a decent job, most of them are pretty believable especially the lead, the psychic, and the camera man. It's the perfect length and the atmosphere is great.
