Wood had worked with a teacher three weeks prior to going to Barcelona and found it stressful having to play the piano and speak at the same time saying, "It was incredibly technical [...] lots of moments where it was jumping from where I'd play, listen to a click, listen to music, have to be in the right place and the right time and hear dialogue and repeat dialogue". Elijah Wood has been doing some interesting films recently. I would say there are 3 that seem to share a similar experimental feeling, two of which I have seen. That would be Maniac, Open Windows, and Grand Piano. Watch the trailers to these films and you will see why I think they share the same style.
Grand Piano is quite similar to the movie Phonebooth. Both share the idea of a person being watched by a sniper and forced to stay in one area. I think the idea works pretty well for this film. It builds the tension and the stakes feel high.
As mentioned before, this film has a slightly experimental feeling. There are unique uses of lighting that are pretty interesting, and also some experimental CGI use. For example, there's a shot where we see somebody grabbing a piece of broken mirror in a POV style shot, and they CGI the persons reflection in the glass, which really reminds me of "Maniac" where we see Elijah Woods reflection in different things.
I would say the best part of this film is really the final musical piece until the end, because that's when things really come to a head. The beginning has little bits of dark comedy thrown in, mostly in the form of a couple that is friends with Elijah Wood's character and his wife, which I felt didn't work. It should have all been kept dramatic and serious.
If you're looking for an interesting and unique thriller/mystery film, check this one out. It also includes Elijah Woods piano playing skills which are pretty impressive and i'm sure would be interesting for piano players to watch.
