Almost all uniforms, insignia, military equipment, weapons and vehicles of the Bosnian Serb Army shown in the movie, are completely inaccurate and never seen in the war in the former Yugoslavia. Whilst some wardrobe pieces (e.g. ranks and insignia) are fully imaginary items, most other military props are obviously of non-local origin (mostly came from former Soviet Block armies, notably Hungary, where most of the filming took place). Practically all of the shown 'Bosnian Serb' distinctive sleeve insignia, are actually from the surplus of The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Army and were, as such, never worn by Serbs in the Bosnian War.

5 stars for the cast and the good cinematography. Too bad, this was the opportunity to say something powerful from a romantic perspective.
No point of making any movie on this subject without knowing these facts unless you just want to ignore them. The must read actual facts address given by the late General Pierre-Marie Gallois on March 25, 2009, in Paris. http://www.balkanstudies.org/articles/understanding- balkan-wars.
This war is a typical - book example of a divide and conquer situation done by superpowers. As a result you have many head-cases self-elect themselves to do the tortures in the "name of their nations". Horrible reality.
I don't think that the goal of the writer/director was a divide and conquer. Lack of knowledge- yes. After centuries of suffering, damage and dissecting of the Balkans by superpowers conquer what? Another superpower match over who will rule the skies above and the Adriatic? While the citizens in the area end up being just casualties of war! To ALL FILMMAKERS: if intending to do the war movie on this subject - try to do the story without using the same stereotype, or do the movie according to the link listed here - that comes from one of the actual architects of this war.
The reason Serbian community reacts negatively is this: the stereotype. It is always Serbs being endlessly portrayed as bad guys - movie after movie, after movie - when in fact huge atrocities are committed by all involved. If the story that AJ wrote was to take place in Bosnian or Croatian camp instead of Serbian camp during this war, the reaction from Bosnia and Croatia would be even more negative than what we see here. Everyone there was guilty, the international community, the ones that did nothing and the ones that caused the whole thing and got involved later; (emphasizing Serbs as main villains is not the reality). It was not 50-50% violence as it never is in any war. All sides were extremely violent, but mostly Serbian violence showed in the movie and bits of others doing.
