Let me first start off by saying how much of a contempt I hold for live action movies based on cartoons. 4/5 times they're awful compared to the show. There are some exceptions like the 1990s Ninja Turtles movie. This movie, is not an exception. Like Scooby Doo and Rocky & Bullwinkle, Fairly Odd Movie faces about every single thing wrong with the cartoon to live action formula. This includes unconvincing transition from cartoon to "reality", character personalities that are not true to the original, and an all around weak scenario that wouldn't work in the show, and certainly doesn't work here. The only characters that ARE true to the original are the fairies, but they're just as bland and generic as the new episodes make them out to be, so whether you'll like them really depends on whether you like the newer episodes. I'll give this movie one thing, they made sure that poof was NOT the most annoying unbearable part of this entire experience, just like the show did when adding the dog...
Oh well... it's not unspeakably untrue to the series it's based off of, it's really just not a good film. If you want to check it out, fine, nothing wrong with that. But for me, someone who really liked the episodes of the first 3 or 4 seasons, it was a painful experience that I don't want to go through again. I'd have to say my biggest problem with the movie is actually a minor part of it. Basically, they make Chester and AJ cynical douche bags. The movie has a million other things wrong with it, but if you ask me, THAT'S just going too far.
