Plot Synopsis
Storyline
Three clueless high school nerds, best friends for years, call themselves the "Mystery Team" and solve neighborhood crimes - such as who poked a finger in a pie cooling on a window ledge - cute at seven but foolish at 18. Then, one morning, a young girl pays them a dime to find out who murdered her parents the night before and took her grandmother's ring. I had, somehow, never heard of Derrick Comedy until someone recommended this movie to me and now that I've seen their debut feature I must say that I'm glad to have found them. Anyone who has enjoyed the antics of Broken Lizard should like this bunch, everyone else may as well just stop reading now.
Mystery Team is all about a trio of immature high school lads who have never given up their hobby of solving mysteries even while the rest of the world has obviously moved on without them. Imagine some Enid Blyton creations acting just as they did in the books while inhabiting the body of an elderly teen male in modern America and that's where a lot of the comedy comes from.
Jason (Donald Glover) is the nominal leader and a master of disguise if that disguise is supposed to look like the world's most obvious disguise. Duncan (D.C. Pierson) is the brains of the bunch thanks to his big book of amazing facts. Charlie (Dominic Dierkes) is the muscle. The team find themselves amusingly oblivious to the fact that they're way out of their depth when a little girl asks them to solve a very real mystery: who was responsible for murdering her parents? The team go all out to solve the mystery, mainly because Jason keeps pushing them while he desperately tries to impress the little girl's big sister Kelly (Aubrey Plaza).
This really is a movie that will either have you laughing out loud almost every other minute (as I was) or just staring at the screen and wondering how on earth anyone can find this nonsense funny.
Nothing on display here is particularly flashy, surprising or cinematic but the performances and the many gems thrown out by the script are worth the viewing price alone. Nothing I could quote here would sound that amusing out of context (though I have now taken to exclaiming "ahhh wood, nature's metal" whenever I can) but it's often gut-bustingly hilarious within the framework of the film.
A very, very funny movie and I hope that the guys from Derrick Comedy go on to make many more films and keep me entertained, just as the Broken Lizard guys did.
