Why?

Mac OS X comes with emacs 21, but it only runs in the terminal. If, like me, you're a Linux user who now also uses OS X, you're probably missing some features in that version, like font-lock-mode and multiple frames. Emacs is not scheduled to officially support an Aqua GUI on OS X until version 21.4, but the CVS version of emacs does support a Carbon GUI, thanks to Andrew Choi's efforts. Building emacs is not that big of a pain, but it can take a while, so I'm sharing a couple of binaries that I built. These will coexist with the emacs that comes with OS X, and I haven't had any problems with fink.

I previously had some builds of emacs that worked on Jaguar up here, but deleted them a while ago. The binaries currently on this page will not work on Jaguar. (Thanks to Kelly Sorensen for pointing this out.) If you want to build on Jaguar, I recommend checking emacs out from cvs and running the "mac/make-package" script in the source tree, which does everything for you.

Downloads

Emacs in Panther now supports font-lock-mode in the terminal, but if you want multiple frames (and multiple fonts), then you'll want this binary. All of the necessary goods are in the app bundle. Enjoy!
