    Easy to read

This book is full of great technical information, but unlike most technical manuals, it is also extremely easy to read. I really think it's the writing that sets this book apart. The explanations are so down to earth and easy to absorb that it doesn't feel like work at all. I actually found myself laughing at the humor of some of the examples while I took on new skills. Thanks, Chris Kubica, for making learning so enjoyable!

Most complete, real world examples, and awesome CDROM

I'm not sure what one or another of those reviewers I've seen on another book site is smoking, but first of all none of those things you pointed out are typos. They made sense to me! That part on 146 was unclear, but it was a minor thing and easily remedied if you simply look in FileMaker's built in help. Why nitpick. Anyway, 8 typos in a 840 page book is small potatos, bud! POTENTIAL BUYERS TAKE NOTE: This book is filled with TONS of hands on, real world examples and techniques on all topics. Keep in mind that the follwoing topics are covered in NO OTHER FILEMAKER BOOK: Applescript, ActiveX, lots of great portal tricks, FMP and MySQL, integrating FMP with faxing, emailing, bar code scanning, Citrix, multi user design, cross-platform design, development standards, building a complete, government-compliant security system, using FileMaker on hand held devices in the real business world, using ten different plugins and details on BUILDING YOUR OWN plugin...need I go on? The book has a Web site (look on google) where you'll find the complete, detailed table of contents ti get the whole skinny on the book. Don't believe those bad reviews. They were clearly looking at a different book or reading when they should have been sleeping.

A MUST HAVE FOR THE FILEMAKER DEVELOPER

This book is a great guide for all Filemaker developers. It is very organized and filled with lots of useful information. It is well researched, in depth and is written with much clarity. I use this book often as a quick reference and useful guide. A 'must have'.

I greatly recommend it. Awesome coverage

I just arrived in HOT Pheonix Arizona for some early meetings at FileMaker's annual international Developer Conference 2003. A friend loaned my her copy of this book and I took it to my hotel room for some nighttime reading. I could not possibly get through all the chapters, but I read the ones that interested me. Wow is what I can say. First, I realized that this book would be good for any training course I might teach on FileMaker which I do often for classes, corporations and private folks. The book starts with no assumption of FMP knowledge but eventually gets there after many step by step examples and suchwise. I also looked up topics I was very interested like building relational DBs and tinkering with AppleScript. Did you know that you can use applescsirpt to automate not only FMP but FM Server as well? This book shows you about it. The only possible beef I have is that I wondered about Web enabling an while there are two whole chapters on it, It doesn't cover every minute aspect of Web enableing. But I must admit, as the author does, that that topic would take a whole nother book to cover and he humbly points you to the right sources. Especially great is a chapter in this book on how to integrate FMP with stuff like email, fax, PDF, graphs, charts, other applications, etc. Also, the coverage of integrating FMP with MySQL for export and import is great-e-o. :)

I Bought This and have not regretted it!!!!! A+++++

My friend is at filemaker DevCon 2003 and we just had breakfast. He wrote a review just now on my wireless ibook and now I'm writing one. He had borrowed the book over night and I was sad because I actually wanted to look through the book's CD which contains literally 100's of great example files some of which I could not have created after even moths of working. Here's what's good about this book, among others. There's a chapter on FM Mobile and wireless integration that I've not seen elsewhere. Never have I seen it, actually. Plus, the author uses astute examples such as Shakespeare and cultural references you can get your mind around when learning sometimes pretty technical stuff. And I love the sections on setting up custom and instant Web sites. It is not totally complete, but you can discern what you need to from the templates on the CD. I'm gonna try to create an eStore maybe based on Chris;s examples. Also, if you find any errors in the book, the author puts them on the book's errata page on No Starch Press's Web site.

The only hands on FMP Reference you need

Some books only have what's already in the user manual. You think, 'who cares! I got that for free with the software?!' And so this book has, what's inthe user manual...but it also has about 700 additional pages of excellent step-by-step instruction that you can find in no one other's book on FileMaker. Let me also say that this book's author is VERY helpful and responsive. I had a question about cascading milestonje dates and the solution was not REALLY available in the book (or at least I did not understnad). So I emailed Chris. Within TEN MINUTES he had sent me a brief explanation AND a free example file showing me how to do what I wanted. Having Chris for free as a resource beyond just his book is like having another FREE 1,000 pages of materials. I could not believe it when I got that email. Another thing you'll find in this book and in no other is whole chapters on planning. Too many developers just jump in and start developing, but this guy tells how to do your project from the REAL software development world and dicusses creating designs, gathering requirements, creating a prototype, testing, development techniques and even development standards. And there's one whole chapter on awesome plugins and how to use them. And I also greatly benefitted from a chapter on the various ways to share FileMaker. There's even a bit on that pesky Citrix! I have never seen such a complete FileMaker book. This one is up on my shelf and I recommend it to all. Period.

A model for the way technical books should be written

I have 22 years in DP, and my initial reaction to this book is that it is one of the best I have ever seen for covering a given program. The book is well organized and includes hundreds of examples. And, thankfully, the code for the examples doesn¿t take up page after page in the text¿bloating it to make it look like there is more information than there really is. The examples are all contained on the CD/ROM. The book is accessible for beginners, but more advanced users won¿t be irritated by the usual ¿here¿s how to turn the computer on¿ instructions that tend to infest too many other computer books. The text and the examples progress nicely from chapter to chapter, introducing progressively more interesting databases. Techniques are well explained. With this book Kubica has pushed the state of the art in computer books a little bit higher. I hope that other computer writers will take note of this book and learn. This book is truly an outstanding work. It is the best book available on FileMaker. More than that, it is a model for how such books should be written in the future.
