Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
ea. vol: charts. diags. photogs. bibliog. glossary. index. (Computer Literacy Skills Series). CIP. Watts. Mar. 1987. PLB $10.90. Gr 7-12Data Bases. . . attempts to present the entire range of available data bases . The beginning chapters provide a discussion of why information needs to be managed and an introduction to different ways computers can help with this process. Next, on-line databases are explored, with specific examples of CompuServe and Medline. The remaining half of the book is devoted to microcomputer-based data management programs. An overview of current Apple and IBM database programs is presented as well as evaluative questions for helping decide which program to use. Detailed examples involving keeping track of a record collection, opinion survey information, science fair data, and other curriculum-related activities round out the text. While this book does a good job of educating readers about microcomputer database systems, the sections on online databases are brief and sketchy. Students will not be able to use this work as their sole information source. However, Data Bases for Beginners is a good supplemental source to have available in a computer literacy classroom. Spreadsheets. . . furnishes readers with a well-rounded introduction to electronic spreadsheets. The text begins with a rationale for using spreadsheets and a discussion of why computers are so useful. Another chapter is devoted to selecting a spreadsheet. The strength of this book is the use of numerous curriculum- and real life-based examples. Detailed discussions provide readers with instructions on using a spreadsheet to construct a time line, deal with data from science experiments, keep track of club finances, and deal with baseball statistics. This book fills a gap in current computer literature and is an excellent supplemental source for students and teachers. Both books contain activities in each chapter that make superb computer literacy assignments. Joanne Troutner, Tippecanoe School Corp., Lafayette, Ind.
