Overview

This book takes readers to the utmost limits of what is possible with FileMaker Pro. Michael Singer offers a wealth of practical techniques for building databases that meet your personal requirements. Offering an even mix of theory and step-by-step instructions, this handy reference guides you through the design and management of a wide range of database designs and includes several predesigned databases that most businesses need daily. It includes step-by-step instructions for creating databases ranging from simple to complex, covers all FileMaker Pro 2 versions for both Macintosh and Windows, and comes packed with real-life examples, including the design of a complete billing and invoice system. This is the ultimate guide to designing databases in FileMaker Pro for experienced users as well as intermediate- to advanced-level consultants.

For the experienced FileMaker Pro user, the novice prewarned. This text goes beyond any information one would find in the manual for FileMaker Pro, and serves as a true introduction of the author's ideas. In detail, the author shows the reader how to use FileMaker Pro in a more customized manner, focusing on the readers' needs and not on the manual's template.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
FileMaker Pro is one of the most popular Macintosh database programs ever; it can handle everything from a recipe file with a dozen records to a catalog of books with thousands of entries. Like any good program, FileMaker is full of helpful features, ready for your use with a little investment of time. Singer helps you learn about FileMaker while guiding you to memorable tricks along the way. He assumes that you're not afraid of programming with scripts. In eight chapters, Singer's advice and tips on scripting will completely alter your use of FileMaker. With scripts, you can add security to your database, build in relationships between data elements like those in more full-bodied programs, and search and sort more efficiently. For the serious FileMaker user, Singer's book is only disappointing in not including a diskette of examples. If you use FileMaker as your bread-and-butter database, you'll need this book to use the program as never before.
