Overview

Take your pick: you may either read this book cover-to-cover, or just refer to it when you want ready-made solutions of "drop-in" code. Either way, Database Programming with Visual Basic .NET, Second Edition will teach you to master ADO.NET programmatically and from within the Visual Studio .NET IDE.

You will learn the concepts of disconnected data access with ADO.NET. You'll also learn to create tables, constraints, projects, stored procedures, views, and triggers. The book will explain how to use SQLXML 3.0 with SQL Server 2000, and how to incorporate message queuing into applications using MSMQ 3.0.

Author Carsten Thomsen, a recognized Microsoft "Most Valuable Professional," carries over one of the most popular features from the first edition: the real-world sample application that he built throughout. With this example code, you can connect to SQL Server from your choices of SQL Server .NET Data Provider, OLE DB .NET Data Provider, or ODBC .NET Data Provider. Exchange Server 2000 data manipulation is also covered, with original working code.

THE DB book for VB .NET programmers

Okay the title is somewhat buyest as I happen to have been speeking with the author, and I find he´s a very nice guy. However, I don´t feel that I base my rating on my personal view of him, I simply like this book very much. The organization with ADO.NET split into (mostly) simple chapters in the first few parts, really makes it easy to learn from scratch, but even non-beginners should be able to pick something from this book as it gradually adds new material to the stuff you learn in the beginning. The reference appendixes are perfect, much better than the help that comes with VS .NET and I find myself using them frequently. Even the more special topics like SQLXML, Exchange server, and concurrency are very well explained starting at beginners level and the gradually adding more knowledge to the stack. This is a very good book!

Database Programming with Visual Basic .Net, Second Edition

I was searching for a DB book with VB .NET example code and there are lots of them. A friend recommended this one and I'm glad she did. There's so much information in this book; it's unbelievable. I skipped chapter 1, but chapter 2 was an excellent refresher, as the author states, and I can certainly use this chapter for later reference. I'm an experienced DB developer and I DO know about normal forms, but like many people I forget things here now and then, so this chapter is a very quick reference. Part II and III are excellent introductions to the two ADO.NET layers and after reading through them, I really understand the concepts of ADO.NET and especially the way it works with disconnected data access. These two parts with apendixes C and D are excellent as reference guides and I can recommend the book just for these chapters/appendixes. Wait, there's more: Stored Procedures, Views, Triggers, exception handling and much more. Truly a book for any serious VB/DB developer.

    Great data access book

I've been through a dozen of database books for VB .NET and no other book covers so much material and in such a detailed way. I really think this book with its reference appendixes stands out from the rest. I thoroughly enjoyed the database design refresher in chapter 2.

Database Programming with Visual Basic .Net, Second Edition

I skimmed through the first edition of this book and decided not to buy. This second edition however, is so much more and I am really pleased I bought it. I've read most chapters and I now find myself using it as a reference. Chapter 2 is an excellent intro into database design and chapters 5-12 (part 2 and 3) really explains the classes of ADO.NET in great detail. It's excellent. I think most chapters are of very good quality, but Chapter 22 is by far the best. Noweher else can you find such detailed coverage of SQLXML 3.0. Buy the book! The publisher most have mixed the TOC from the first edition with the second edition it seems as there are now 26 chapters and some appendixes.
