PREFACE: This book is intended to provide guidance to the new administrator of an SAP R/3 installation using DB2 Universal Database (DB2 UDB) as the database management system. It is designed to be very task-oriented and focused on bridging the gap between the R/3 and DB2 worlds. This book is not intended to replace SAP R/3 and DB2 Universal Database education.

This book will help you install and configure SAP R/3 using DB2 Universal Database as the database manager on the AIX and Windows NT platforms. It will also provide a broad understanding of the R/3 and DB2 Universal Database architecture.

You should understand that the installation chapters of this book only reflect the activities involved in the implementation of R/3 version 4.0B and DB2 UDB version 5.0. Please refer to the current SAP supplied installation documentation and OSS Notes to generate your own installation plan. This book is not intended to eliminate the need for a certified SAP R/3 consultant when installing SAP R/3 for the first time.

Chapter 1 contains an introduction to the R/3 and DB2 Universal Database architecture and facilities. The subsequent chapters will assist you in the planning, installation, administration, maintenance and tuning of your new R/3 and DB2 UDB environment. The installation chapters will be especially useful during the initial planning and preparation phases of your R/3 and DB2 implementation.

The Team That Wrote This Book

This book was produced by a team of specialists from around the world working at the International Technical Support Organization Austin Center.

Jonathan Cook is the DB2 Project Leader at theInternational Technical Support Organization (ITSO), Austin Center. He has ten years of experience as a database specialist working in the areas of application development and database administration. He has been with IBM since 1992, working in both the United Kingdom and France before joining the Austin ITSO. He writes extensively and teaches IBM classes worldwide on DB2 for the UNIX and Intel platforms.

Diane DeVere Bullock has been a Database Specialist since 1986 working with both DB2 and IMS, and has been with IBM Global Service for 4 years. Diane provides consulting services internationally in the areas of database tuning, query tuning, cross platform data replication, and DRDA connectivity.

Stephen Deedes-Vincke is a Database Specialist in the United Kingdom. He has been working with DB2 on most platforms for the last 5 years. This is the second book he has worked on, having previously contributed to the SQL/DS V3 R4 Performance Guide GG24-4047-00.

Robert Harbus is the DB2 Universal Database Certification and Education coordinator at the IBM Toronto Lab. A member of the DB2 UDB team since its inception in 1991, Robert provided Technical Marketing and electronic customer support and direct customer support most recently as a member of the DB2 Universal Database Enterprise - Extended Edition (EEE) support team. Robert is currently responsible for the DB2 UDB certification program and testing, and works with the ITSO and Education & Training to ensure that DB2 UDB education courses, training and material are available to meet the needs of DB2 UDB users. Robert teaches DB2 internals and certification courses worldwide and is involved in producing certification guides and redbooks.

Luke Nardone is an SAP Certified Technical Consultant for IBM Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He has been supporting IBM's SAP effort for the last 4 years. For the 5 years previous to his SAP assignment Luke was responsible for AIX support on workstations as well as 9076/SP2 systems.

Rodolfo F. Neuhaus is a professional service specialist from IBM Peru. He is a SAP R/3 Basis consultant and a DB2 technical consultant on the VM, MVS, OS2 and AIX platforms. He is currently working as a SAP Basis technical architect for Andean companies. His primary responsibilities are to provide SAP Basis consultant and technical support for customers running SAP R/3 on the IBM RS/6000.
