Overview

Expert Oracle GoldenGate is a hands-on guide to creating and managing complex data replication environments using the latest in database replication technology from Oracle. GoldenGate is the future in replication technology from Oracle, and aims to be best-of-breed. GoldenGate supports homogeneous replication between Oracle databases. It supports heterogeneous replication involving other brands such as Microsoft SQL Server and IBM DB2 Universal Server. GoldenGate is high-speed, bidirectional, highly-parallelized, and makes only a light impact on the performance of databases involved in replication.

The authors share their experience in the form of tutorials on designing and implementing all types of Oracle GoldenGate environments. You’ll learn methods for tuning Oracle GoldenGate performance. You’ll discover GoldenGate’s utility as a migration and extract, transform, load (ETL) tool. You’ll learn to configure highly-available environments involving GoldenGate, Real Application Clusters, and Data Guard. From installation to design to implementation and troubleshooting, Expert Oracle GoldenGate helps you master all aspects of using and applying Oracle GoldenGate as the replication tool of choice in your environment.

A Great Guide to Learning How to Implement Oracle GoldenGate

I was offered a chance to review this book as an independent reviewer. I'll first provide the positives and then the negative to get to why I wish I can give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. It provides an excellent overview of the Goldengate software, its components, and the power of its scripting language and command line tools. The examples were thorough and provides an excellent overview of the steps necessary to install, setup, and use this software for replication. The technical depth of the chapters was superb and providing the places (i.e. links/names of correct documentation) to look for additional information. This is not a complete manual on Goldengate (that's Oracle's job), however, it does provide a good starting point for most of what you would consider using it for, and then you can get into more depth with the Oracle documentation. The coverage of what you can do with the scripts is well covered throughout the text. It provides examples on setting up with multiple vendors' databases (i.e. Microsoft, DB2, etc.) beyond Oracle which is a plus for those who aren't in an Oracle only environment. Now for the minor criticism about this book. While this is a technically oriented book providing detail on using this software, I think there should have been more effort to "sell" the reader on why they should choose Goldengate over the alternatives. Other than a few brief paragraphs mentioning Oracle's other replication products (i.e. Basic/Advanced replication, Streams) there was hardly any effort on defining why it would be better to choose Goldengate vs. those other approaches. A comparison of features/capabilities between the products (or that of competitors) and Goldengate would be of great assistance. Many DBA's might need this kind of info to sell the idea to their management on, for example, using Goldengate vice Streams. Since this is a niche product compared to general database usage, any assistance in helping to guide them toward decisions on using this product is helpful. For those who are planning on implementing Oracle Goldengate, this book provides an excellent head start a successful installation!
