On the whole I found the book was fast-paced, which from a professional perspective was ideal ('time is money'!). The initial theoretical coverage of topics (with interesting historical details) provides a solid grounding, followed by practical coverage that is reinforced with numerous examples. Some topics are necessarily closely-tied to a particular RDBMS (Oracle, in this case), but the author is careful to explain where vendor-specific concepts are used. Overall the book delivers on its title's suggested content, and a great deal more besides.

This is a very clear and concise introduction to Java programming language and SQL. It covers Java and database fundamentals as well as more advanced topics in lucid language, and includes plenty of good examples. The book is very easy to follow and will be a most useful companion to both beginners and more advanced Java and SQL programmers. I highly recommend it.
