Just Enough Web Programming with XHTML, PHP, and MySQL provides a layperson's guide to web programming for the casual web designer, student, or serious professional. The book explains how to build powerful interactive sites, whether you're designing a bulletin board, game, or web store. As part of the Just Enough series, the book provides "just enough" information to get you started quickly, without overloading you with unnecessary details. After a brief introduction, the book concisely explains the XML, XHTML, and CSS concepts you need to understand to start creating web sites. From there, you'll start programming and learning the basics of client side and server side scripting and web databases. Then it's time to put it all together using Content Management Systems. The book includes several chapters on emerging Web 2.0 and how you can put it to use to create your own interactive sites quickly. Part of the beauty of Just Enough Web Programming with XHTML, PHP, and MySQL is its breadth of coverage. By cutting out what you don't need, the book helps you learn a lot about web programming, and helps you put all of the information together to make a site quickly. So what are you waiting for? Let's get started!

I do see a market for this kind of book, which provides 'just enough' information about web programming techniques. <BR/><BR/>At one extreme, you have expert web programmers who need an in-depth guide to a specific technology like PHP. At the other extreme you have people who just want to create a simple web page using a basic HTML editor. Somewhere in the middle you have a group of people like my target audience. <BR/><BR/>While my books teach people how to use Yahoo! Pipes and other mashup technologies designed for 'intermediates', I don't want to give anything more than simple examples of how -- for example -- the Y! Pipes results can be embedded in a web page using HTML and JavaScript, perhaps styled with CSS. Nor do I want to teach people what RSS is, or how to device web services that can be called from the Y! Pipes. In other words, it would be useful for my readers to have a round-up of the periphery web techniques and technologies -- so that I can focus on my own topic. <BR/><BR/>The title of this book is a little problematic for me. The "Just Enough Web Programming" is attractive to the intermediates, but the "XHTML, PHP, and MySQL" part might be a little off-putting. Not only because it sounds technical; but also because it sells this book short. Why not also mention CSS, RSS, Ajax, JavaScript and other technologies discussed in this book?
