    JOHN SMILEY DOES IT AGAIN

This book leads you thru a complete database program in a classroom atmosphere. Prof. Smiley takes a great deal of time to explain the concepts completely. This book is a must have if you want a clear understanding of the Database Process. I felt that I understood the Recordset better than I ever did with the other books that I used. Thanks to Mr. Smiley for another great book.

If you need to learn this, you need Smiley.

John Smiley's skills as a teacher are as good as his skills with programming and VB. This shows clearly in all his Learn to Program Books (LTP), including LTP Databases with VB6. The environment is that of a classroom filled with bright but uninformed students who have a natural series of questions, reservations, fears, and incertainties... just as we all do when learning a new complex topic. In this environment, I often found my questions being answered, even as I was asking them. The author's ability to keep the reader focussed on the the matter at hand, namely learning the principles and major tools of programming databases, is superb. The text covers everyhting you need to know to use DAO objects and the intrinsic VB data control to access and manipulate databases. The important events properties and methods of the data control, the DAO recordset, and the important surrounding features are well covered in both theory and practice (using his now infamous China Shop program as an example). Only basic VB6 skills are required to get the most from this book, and the author often shores up any weak patches in basic skills as well. Microsoft's shifted emphasis on ADO as opposed to DAO for new VB6 programming is my only source of diappointment, as ADO is only cursorily addressed. Some books are best only for reference, providing little readability or useful instruction after the desired material is located. In contrast, The LTP books are for exactly what they say they are for... when you want to 'learn to program'... and no one teaches that better than John Smiley.

    Excellent Topic Coverage

Professor Smiley out-did himself on this book....He covers advanced topic related to database design and the programming aspects. However, he put these topics in plain English. I am on the master's level of my computer programming degree. His book covered the same topics my professor covered. However, there was a big difference. Professor Smiley communicated his topics in plain English. My professors speak so high tech it's hard to understand them. Even though your a beginner they expect you to understand the computer jargon associated with their field of study. Professor Smiley does not make tha assumption. I believe anyone who has professors like i had needs this book. It will simply your whole life. I understand VB programming a whole lot clearer now...thanks to Professor Smily I suggest your buy his other books listed below. Thank you ....Dr. Smiley...May God bless you, your team, student, and your family.

great introductory database book for VB

Great introductory book if you want to learn to program database with VB. The conversation-oriented style really helps beginners to pick up new information without feeling so overwhelmed. One of the few books that actually discussed and applied software development process. One of the few authors who actually answered my emails on topics that I did not pick up the first time through. You should definitely get this one.

Excellent level of explanation for beginners

Mr. Smiley's method of teaching in a fictional classroom may not be everyone's ideal format, but I find that it is ideal for me. I understand the concepts of programming much more thoroughly than I have when reading other instructional books. In this book, he continues developing the China Shop program introduced in his earlier book. I plan to continue the series as soon as I've finished this one.

For introductory VB/DB this book is in a league of its own. A exceedingly well written book. Totally original and refreshing style - so unlike most computer books.

John Smiley takes the material to you!

Professor Smiley is a well-known name to user's of Ziff Davis University (Now SmartPlanet.com) programming courses, where he sets a high standard in teaching Visual Basic. This expertise comes through in his VB books, and notably in this one. No ivory tower professor, John Smiley understands the challenges in learning the material, and takes the explanations to the right level. The author walks you through the process of program development in VB, as if in a classroom. He answers the questions you are asking, as the material is presented. I feel this is the best book on the subject currently available.
