This is a great book as far as main contents are concerned, but it won't serve you well as an exam prep book, as test questions are nonsense. I would assume that the author just bought bunch of sample problems from some company for a dime instead of writing them himself. The problems with the problems fall under one of these categories: (1) Fair question, but no appropriate answer in the choice. (2) The question does not provide sufficient information to really decide on one of the answers: the right answer is 'it depends...tell me more' in such case.(3) Downright wrong answer and to make it worse, wrong reasoning to support it. For instance, it treats INSERT and INSERT INTO as completely different critters and ask you to differenciate these two by their functionalities (page244,#13). (4) Poor wording - it goes: 'An existing catalog database structure exists on a system within your company' (page185, #6), which has nothing to do with the question about indexing. So, if you think you can handle these questions, go get the book.. the main contents that explain how things work is great and well-organized and will serve you as a reference.

Most of the Chapters are better written and more well-organized than the average computer book. To pass the exam, you need to know the subject-matter well, not just memorize facts. This book definitely helped me pass because it offers clear explanations of the topics you need to understand in order to think through the problems. Where it could really be improved is in the exercises and sample test questions. Many test questions were poorly worded and not even really valid test items. The book also has more than its share of typos. I noticed that in at least two different places, it says there's a list of DBCC commands (which would be nice to have to study) - but I couldn't find the list anywhere! They should have proofread it better.

This is a great book. I read this book and did the end of the chapter questions. I had experience with SQL 2000, but the book helped to reinforce what I needed to know to pass the test. I recommend it to anyone who wants to pass the 70-229 test.
