Purpose: The editor covers new techniques regarding biomedical imaging databases and their applications in clinical services, education, and research. Contributors were chosen because of their ongoing work in investigating and developing these databases.
Audience: Those best served by this book include biomedical engineers and physicists, particularly those working in radiology departments. System administrators and radiologists heavily involved in PACS, telemedicine, and image database management would find this book interesting. The contributors include a diverse group of experts in their respective fields including radiologists, engineers, physicists, and computer science professionals. These front runners in development of medical image processing and database design were chosen by the editor for the "cutting edge" work they are doing in their respective fields.
Features: The editor begins with a very thorough discussion of all aspects of digital imaging. Subsequent chapters include works in the areas of medical image database design, data management, data compression and transmission, and image accessibility via the web. Although the topics are quite diverse, valuable information includes the hundreds of up-to-date references complementing each chapter. Overall, the diverse set of articles certainly stimulates further interest in the development of these databases. The poor quality of image reproduction is a definite drawback, although images are scarce to begin with, since the primary focus of this text relates to the technical aspects of imaging.
Assessment: Since I look at this book as a "yearbook" for medical image databases, I give it high marks for bringing together a varied collection of contributors to present interesting and innovative examples of their work in this ever growing and ever changing field.
