Multi-Level Data Privacy For Mobile Databases Using Multi-Views.

Mobile databases are essential components of ubiquitous computing. They are not only essential tools for increasing productivity but also enable individuals to draw upon knowledge resources to make intelligent decisions. Due to their usefulness and popularity, they are now being installed even on mobile phone platforms. Their widespread use has resulted in the distribution of information and data on a very large scale. This easy access to information has necessitated the addressing of a number of issues, the most important one being the protection of personal information. Several countries have enacted laws and several organizations have issued privacy regulations to ensure data privacy and prevention of unauthorized access to personal data.

In this, an approach to ensure data privacy in mobile databases at architectural level of databases is described. A review of various previous investigations on data privacy of mobile databases is mentioned. This also gives constructive definitions of mobile databases and data privacy. The concepts of multi-level data privacy, user privacy access levels in user profiles, and multi level privacy constraints for attributes in a database are introduced. The processes for determining user privacy access level from user profiles after user authentication and creating multi views based on multi level privacy characteristics have been described. Minor modifications to the SQL processor needed to implement these processes, and hence the multi level data privacy for mobile databases, have been indicated. The proposed approach has been illustrated by suitable examples. These examples clearly demonstrate the fact that multi-level data privacy for mobile databases can be easily and effectively implemented by incorporating minor modifications to the standard SQL processor.
